How to get a prepaid SIM card with data when travelling overseas (USA)

On a vacation to USA recently, I was posed with the problem on how to be able to use data on my smart phone without using roaming.
On my previous trips to US, I had simply bought a AT&T GoPhone SIM card from ebay and activated it once I landed in US and then added a suitable package and feature plan from AT&T. However, this time I couldn’t for the life of me add a credit card to AT&T, either by phone or their web site, since they needed an US credit card, and because I live in Sweden it did not work. I also checked the price for the feature packages, 50 MB would cost $10, using the $25 data plan. Pretty expensive.
Anyways, I found a T-Mobile store, went inside and had a nice chat with a sales man. T-Mobile offered a prepaid $50 plan, including SIM card and 1 GB data, free nation calls and texts. For $60, I could get 2 GB of data. I was only going to use data primarily for Google maps, thus 1 GB would be sufficient for my 1 week stay. Took me no less than 5 minutes, then I was out of the store happily using data on my phone.
